part 2 we ended last time with the thought that who am i is not constant at any one point in time. we play different roles at work, with friends, at school, with family? all of these roles have some element of “me”. but they are also different roles i play in all these different environments with the different people i interact with each day. quit asking me questions! i want an answer. who am i? just tell me so i can get on with my life and become who i really want to be. wouldn’t it be great if it were that simple? but you know it’s not. it’s not simple. who i am is a whole conglomeration of different roles we take on in this life. first role is the child, the baby whose every need has to be taken care of by someone else. then we become the toddler and start to individuate. we become aware that there is a “me” and a “not me”. oh, this hand is “me” but this doll is “not me”. then we become aware of others and the external environment. life is a struggle to answer the question of “who am i?”. which role am i in with this person. can i step out of a “role” with this person and be “myself”? but who am i outside of the “roles” i inhabit? now we’re getting somewhere! am i simply a conglomeration, the sum total, of all the different roles i play or inhabit? or is there more to me than that? something deeper, truer, more “real” than a role i play when interacting with someone else. i. me. the true, deep self who we keep hidden from others (and very likely even from ourselves). discovering that person. me. becoming me. that is maslow’s self actualization. it’s hard, difficult. scott peck said it better than i can with the simple statement that begins the road less traveled . “life is difficult”. when we can acknowledge that we can begin to know our true self and become who we are meant to be. if it was easy everyone would be doing it. it is not an easy thing. to know myself, for you to know yourself and become “me”. even people who state they desperately want to get “better”, to know themselves resist this process. it is change. change is scary and difficult. again, if it was easy everyone would be doing it. so before beginning this journey you have to ask yourself a question. do i really want to “change”? one of life’s biggest questions, right? if i want to change i have to ask myself, what am i changing? who am i? life is a journey. a series of “destinations” or “stops” along the way. who am i is a question with different answers along the way. at first i am a single cell with half of my dna from one parent and half from the other. cells divide and differentiate as i grow in the womb. i am completely cared for and all of my needs are met in the womb. then one day a shocking event occurs. i am evicted from this most awesome environment where all my needs are met, i was safe and had no concerns. then – bam – i am pushed through a narrow “canal” (unless i am “cut” out of my home, c-section), my head is compressed and someone on the other end is pulling me out against my will. i am born and the producers are right there…mom and dad (if i’m lucky). my parents produced me and they are going to be the directors of my life for a long, long time. unfortunately for some people their parents stay in the director role longer than is helpful. we will get into that later. there i am. i am a helpless infant. i can’t feed myself or take care of myself in any way. i need these producer/directors to take care of me and i begin to learn that they do not always take care of what i need when i need it. i learn more about what the limits are and i begin to learn how to communicate my needs to these people. so, who am i? at first an infant who can’t communicate. then i grow and develop into a toddler who begins to learn how to communicate with these “producer/director” people, (my parents) as well as others in my world. who am i, will continue to evolve over the course of my development from infant to adult with many “stops” along the way. there will be many milestones achieved during those first 15-20 years. and then i continue to evolve and develop as life goes on. who am i is not even a constant at any one point in time. who am i when i am at work? where are you in your personal exploration? last post asked you to think about where you are right now as a prelude to exploring who am i and how did i get “here”. the question was then posed when will i get “there”? first of all where is “there”? is it a location? the end of your personal exploration? or is “there” only another stop along the your continuing exploration? is life a journey or a destination? the answer to that question will help you determine where “there” is for you. it would appear there are then two ways to think about this. journey or destination? where you fall on this will help you as you begin (or continue or revisit) your personal exploration. if life is a journey almost by definition “there” is a moving target. “there” is a step along your continuing personal journey and exploration. as you keep on with your journey you will arrive at many “stops” (or “theres”) along the way. you will achieve or meet interim goals as you continue to explore. you will never get “there” because “there” is not a destination but simply an interlude or resting place as you continue exploring. once you are at the top of the mountain or you reach what appears to be the end of the road you will see the next valley or realize the “end of the road” is an illusion as the road continues ever onward. if life is a journey you will reach many “there’s” and each time you will figure out the next “there” as you continue your personal exploration. if your perspective is that life is a destination then you may already have a specific idea or definition of where “there” is for you. the psychologist abraham maslow listed a hierarchy of needs (destinations if you will) with physiological needs (food, shelter, etc.) being primary, followed by the need for safety, love/belonging, esteem and finally self-actualization. for example, a person may not be getting their basic physiological needs met (lack of food and shelter). for that person meeting those needs may be where “there” is for them. but, if maslow is right, once that physiological need is met that person will then have the need for safety, then love, etc. therefore, “there” would continue to change and that person would be on a journey as well, to meet their continuing evolving “needs”. is it ever possible for a person to reach their destination? only if a person decides to cease their own personal exploration either through a personal decision or through some type(s) of mental illness. as an example, a person suffering from severe clinical depression would need to address that disease before continuing on their personal exploratory journey. the depression would effectively “stop” their journey. additionally, a person may “choose” to stop their personal exploration somewhere along the way. for example, if a person has met their physiological and safety needs th
